Thanks muchly, you guys truly rock.

Funny, I used to do this kind of research on my own - collect barware from places like the Playboy Club, go to the Central Library, check the crumbling old phone books for the locations of tiki bars/restaurants, or clubs owned by Jerry Lewis, Walter Wonderly, Jimmy Smith, etc. then go take pix of 'me. To see the ads, interior shots, band line ups and modern day exteriors is a complete pleasure for me. This post brings the past 50 years of LA venues and their acts to life...you three have documented what could so easily have been lost. Now all I want is to have my 50th at Mavericks Flat and dj there!!! Thank you again and agan - just superb. More Clubs from the 60's into the start up 70's, when record companies would come down and sign musicians and artists on the spot, included Imperial West on Prairie and now the 105Fwy, Mr. Mitch's Another World on Western near Manchester,The Dodger Club on Broadway then "Santa Barbara Ave", now MLKing Blvd, The Amber Lite on Van Ness near Rosecrans, Parisian Room at Washington and LaBrea (now the Ray Charles Post Office), The Tiki Room, Hazel's & Herbs,Jefty's The Five Torches on Crenshaw Blvd and Imperial Hwy, The Mint Club, Edgar Charles' Carribean Room on Adams, definitely the California Club that featured Lou Rawls and a young Jimi Hendrix,The Name of the Game 1 on 120th and Western, Dootoo's,later for a short period of time into the 70's The Total Experience, down the street from Maverick's Flat and more hosted such names
as Nancy Wilson, Joe Willams, Della Reese, Nina Simone, Johnny Taylor,Barbara Morrison, Skillet and Leroy with Cathy Cooper,Carmen McCrae, Millie Jackson, The Spinners, The Whispers, Tarvares, B.B.King, The Young Hearts, The Checkmates, Cardella Di Milo,Leon Haywood, Tyrone Davis, O.V.Wright,Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd Street Band, and so many others, along with local band favorites, like Peace, Love and Happiness, Jimmy Hamilton and Say What?,The Upsetters, Charlie Tuna, Patti and Tony Williams, and later on Michael Peterson, aka "Mr. Aretha Franklin"...The Los Angeles Scene was HUGE with great musicians such as David T. Walker, Wah Wah Watson, Tony Drake, Paul Humphrey,David Ii,James Bigbee, Gail Deadrick, Louis Van Taylor, Raymond Pounds, and too many more to name here..I hope we keep talking to all who were involved in the post period of famed Central Avenue when the talent was on 7 nigths a week and were all can attest to delvoping their chops...not to mention there are so many from that era who are still doing it today in all genres of music!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20669920.post-48985266186765431252007-07-25T22:28:00.000-07:002007-07-25T22:28:00.000-07:00Wow! I'm so glad you enjoyed it. This blog has been a long time in coming for us.

For anyone interested in visiting any of these places, Maverick's Flat still hosts soul groups all the time. I can't personally speak to the quality of all the groups that play there, but your own taste can probably dictate whether or not you wanna stop in on any given night.

Just a few blocks east, the Flying Fox features a legendary gumbo on Friday nights, voted the best in Los Angeles several times recently.

Also in this "Crenshaw" area district is a place called the World Stage. It has been going now for about ten years and spawned acoustic jazz in the hard bop and avant-garde tradition, including Black/Note and the B Sharp Jazz Quartet. This Friday, July 13th, Billy McCoy is playing down there, and there are still regular jam sessions that go on from Thursday evening until the wee hours of the morning. The World Stage isn't as intellectualized as a lot of the college jazz worshops or other traditionalist events and stages. While those have their place, the World Stage has a lot of young people discovering groovy afro sounds from jazz's history and fusing them with styles and solos indicative of our contemporary concerns.

Thanks for checking in, and I hope everyone enjoys the blog.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20669920.post-67950772106055359792007-07-12T16:04:00.000-07:002007-07-12T16:04:00.000-07:00Wow, thanks for this!
